The purpose of the WATA Research and Outcomes Committee is to promote athletic training related research in the state of Wisconsin. This is accomplished through the solicitation, review, and funding of research proposals submitted by the membership, providing Free Communications at WATA sponsored events, and performing the research related needs of the WATA leadership.

WATA members interested in serving on the Research & Outcomes Committee should send a letter of interest and current curriculum vitae or resume via e-mail to committee chair David Bazett-Jones.

Research Grant Awards:
The WATA awards up to $1000 for individuals as grants to fund research on various sports medicine topics. Each Fiscal Year, $4000 is allocated by the WATA for this purpose.

WATA Member
Graduate Students (must have faculty advisor)

Expectations of Award Recipients:
Award recipients will provide an oral or poster presentation at the WATA Annual Business Meeting and Symposium upon completion of their research.

Due Dates:
Grant applications are reviewed quarterly

Publications / Presentations from Previous Awards:
Dr. Greg Rebella's study, "A Prospective Study of Injury Patterns in High School Pole Vaulters" has been accepted for publication in The American Journal of Sports Medicine. This study was funded, in part, by a grant from the WATA Research and Outcomes Committee (link to article)

2010 WATA Annual Meeting Free Communication Session:
Call for Abstracts: Individuals interested in presenting their original research or case reports as an Oral or Poster Presentation at the WATA Annual Meeting and Symposium should:

  • Submit and abstract of no more than 450 words (in the same format as NATA or GLATA) to Committee Chair, David Bazett-Jones
  • Deadline for submission is March 1, 2010
  • Applicants will be notified within 2 weeks regarding status of their submission
  • Consider using the WATA as a practice session for NATA!
  • Graduate and Undergraduate abstracts are welcome. Undergraduate students should also consider submission to the WATA Student Writing Contest

Plan of Implementation for the Rehabilitation Outcomes Study

Phase I
Goal: Create and distribute a survey to members to gauge their willingness to participate (i.e. feasibility of find participating individuals & sites).

Phase I was completed in February 2009. Survey Results

Phase II
Goal: Determine cost feasibility associated with a Wisconsin Athletic Training Rehabilitation Outcome Study.

Timeline: April 2009 - Report cost feasibilitiy to WATA Board of Directors

Phase III
Goal: If feasible, Reaserch & Outcomes Committee will carry out study in conjuction with Reimbursement and Employee Committee members.

Phase IV
Goal: Distribute findings to Public Relations, Reimbursement and Employment, and Governmental Affairs Committee for distribution to external entities. Also distribute findings to membership and participatintg sites.
